Arizona Schools Chief Diane Douglas May Face Competition In 2018 Race
Arizona Superintendent Of Public Instruction Diane Douglas may have some competition in state elections next year. Tempe City Council member David Schapira is expected to announce his decision about entering the race Tuesday afternoon.
Council member Schapira is a democrat. He said he’s thinking of entering the race because he has experience in the education system that Douglas lacks.
"I’ve been a classroom teacher, I’ve been an administrator, I’ve been a school board member, I’ve been a legislator," he said. "So I know what makes schools work and I know how to navigate the legislative process."
Incumbent Diane Douglas has held the position since 2015. The republican ran on platforms like ending Arizona’s Common Core standards.
